Is it wise to turn on scanning for .jpg files then or is more of a waste of
time.
Until McAfee's wild claim can be confirmed, I don't see the need to turn on
scanning for .jpg files.

Not much. But as the interviewer in the AP article stated, it is only a
matter of time now that it has been proven it could be done after all. We
will most likely see this type of exploit in a socially engineered trojan.
Snow White is still floating around out there...
