Re: [libreoffice-design] MimeType icons - Draw
Hi Bernhard and Mirek, Thanks for the comments. I thought I might try my hand at simplified high contrast icon but will wait until later. (Especially as we switched the template and document icons - what has not been implemented in the source files uploaded. http://picasaweb.google.com/JaronBaron/LibreOffice#5561372495654980738 Thanks for stepping in - even today I spent some more time on this icon, but I didn't find a better approach... There are three minor points I want to mention concerning your draft: 1. As the heavier items are in the upper area of the symbol it doesn't look very balanced. Even if I don't like to copy the ODF icons, perhaps we should move the rectangle up and the triangle / circle down. Hmmm, yes I see that now. I was attempting to keep your circle/triangle symbol for the small icon since it looks quite good. Maybe Christoph will play with the balance otherwise I may move stuff around. 2. I have a minor problem with the rectangle with handles lent from the ODF icons: Draw doesn't use round handles - and a rectangle has eight square handles. Polygons can be drawn with one handle on each corner, so you can create a rectangle with four of them - or a trapezoid, if it fits better with the overall design. Yes... I realize this is an issue. I feel like this came up before with the universal odf icon format. I think even though its not representative it may be universally understood. We could alternatively switch them to rectangular handles but I think having 8 would be excessive. That being said, I am not terribly attached to it so I won't really expend energy defending its use. I will think of some other subject for the icon. 3. I don't know if the white fill inside the triangle doesn't look too harsh - did you try the light yellow? (But this might be less visual, when the icons are switched to the lighter background). Agreed. That was a mistake on my part, more of an artifact left over from some experimentation. It looks better as a see-through object or as a light yellow. [libreoffice-design] Only one menu entry for LibreOffice
Hi all, i was advised to also contact this mailing list so the bug report gets attention from people like you. My suggestion is to remove all menu entries like Calc, Impress etc. but LibreOffice. [1] I would like to know what the usability experts have to say about this suggestion. In several books you can read that the (total!) number of menu items should not exceed five or six items because it depends on the shortterm memory. [libreoffice-design] Naming and format of MimeType icons - request to developers
Hi all, just to inform you: I posted a message to the developer list to find out how the icons should be formatted and called for easy inclusion in the packages: http://lists.freedesktop.org/archives/libreoffice/2011-January/005839.html Best regards Bernhard -- Unsubscribe instructions: E-mail to design+h...@libreoffice.org List archive: http://listarchives.libreoffice.org/www/design/ *** All posts to this list are publicly archived for eternity ***

My personal attitude is similar - we discussed it at one of the OpenOffice.org mailing lists last year. But as this topic doesn't seem to be very urgent at the moment, I'd like to ask you, if you could wait another few weeks for a more detailed reply? Most of us spend as much time as they can in the development of an initial set of desktop icons for LibreOffice, that might be included in the final version of LibO 3.3.0 (the third Release Candidate has just been announced). I can't take the time to comment your proposal in an appropriate way, and others might feel similar. If we don't start this topic soon after the release - would you send us a reminder? Re: [libreoffice-design] MimeTyme icons - Macro
Hi Mirek, hi Bernhard! Am Donnerstag, den 13.01.2011, 19:33 +0100 schrieb Mirek M.: 2011/1/13 Bernhard Dippold bernh...@familie-dippold.at Hi all, as I wasn't able to have any good idea on Draw and Base, I went over to the Macro icon idea I had in mind for some time now: Cool! The two gear-wheels of my first proposal are too bold for the larger icons, so I played with syntax highlighted text (directly copied from LibO macro code window). So it's getting real high-fidelity, don't you think? :-) Here is the result: http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/File:Macro_icon_proposal.png I like it. +1 A great start, but I'd like to add some thoughts as well. When I tried to collect some of the symbolism ideas, I've noticed that the new icon theme in LibO does not show any gear wheel :-( Instead, the icons there are a funny mix of everything ... so there is a need to decide whether to keep or not to keep the gear wheel. This is what I've added to the wiki page: The tango icons don't use a gear wheel for the macros. Sometimes it looks like a stack of paper, a piece of paper with syntax highlighted code, or a rectangular play button. So, if the gear wheel might be hard to identify, how about using/overlaying this play button? Personally, I think there is enough differentiation to media files. Up to you ... The longer I am looking at the (large) icons, the more I'd like to propose to use thicker lines for the code ... but then it gets (maybe too) similar to Writer. And, if I remember correctly, once you mentioned the terminal window surrounding that code. Did you try that (maybe you did, and there were good reasons to omit that)? The gradient on the gear wheels is still too dark (should be the same as the document border), but I have to stop for tonight. I uploaded the source again to the known destination, linked from the Icon wiki page: (I updated the present work status) Thanks! Currently, I'm not sure what icon to pick tomorrow - maybe Math, or maybe Draw. Although I've spend too much time with Impress today, so something different helps to tidy up my mind. If anybody of guys wants to work on that, just let us know (on the list). Sorry, I'm - again - unable to answer many of the other posts (Björn, why do I omit your posts so regularly?), but other LibO duties also require some time.
