[libreoffice-design] Challenge banner proposals by Paulo on Design wiki page
I have put Paulo's banner proposals on the Design wiki page (proposals) section so that they would not get lost in the threads. Let me know if I should have put them at some other location. Hi, Nice work on those, they look quite pleasant. Just to share the first view of the banners, ideas, and in reference to the fund raising thank you banner, without regard to whether it runs with or without a sibling. I would not use the monies amount directly, or perhaps to say would change the focus away from the money and to the goal that was attained with the money. So from - Than you for raising 50 000 euro to - Than you, for your contribution in moving the idea of a free, independent foundation supporting Free Open Source Software and LibreOffice to reality! The Document Foundation. Well, as I say that is the first thought that came to mind, it could edited for sure, not to mention it likely does not fit in a banner form factor. But IMO that is a message, in general, that should be sent back to the people that contributed. [libreoffice-design] DFD banner for our website
Hi, Marc started a discussion on the website-ml about a banner for Document Freedom Day [1] on our website. Matt started the development of the banner [2] and I put it on a wikipage for discussions: http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Donate_and_DFD_Banner Daniel gave one more banner [3]. I try to get it in the wiki later, if nobody else would put it right in. As Marc suggested we should do the discussion about the banner itself on the design-ml. So here we are. RE: [libreoffice-design] You've got hate-mail
Hi, I do think he has several valid points, but I do see how it will require a lot of time and coordination to implement it. I thought I would address them on a point by point basis: 1.The first thing to point out is the name. Running OpenOffice.org all together to make one word was dumb and Lbre Office is trying to do the same (LibreOffice). Worse yet was how people would say "O-O-O" and now I see people calling this new office suite "LibO" on the mailing lists. If you want a shorter nick name you should call it "Libre" as saying freedom just sounds cool and certainly has a lot of excitement behind it. It makes me think of tech savy youth in the Middle East that are willing to risk their lives for libre/freedom. -This is more a marketing discussion than a design one. IMHO, I don't see this as a huge problem at this moment. 2.The web site for Libre Office is horrible, which was initially ok as it was just getting started, but now that they've put a little effort into the site it actually looks worse. While paper does provide a good metaphor for office productivity, the clipped paper icon that appears everywhere is really no good. Below I have a suggestion for the logo that i made rather quickly. -As I've stated in previous emails here, we need a motif that doesn't center on the clipped paper design. This issue should be resolved once we decide on a motif. 3.Also, all the mime type icons also used that clipped paper concept. I also have some samples for that as well below. I'm not quite sure what the color palette is being used by Libre Office for its marketing and icon development, but I would like to strongly recommend looking at using the same color palette as the Tango icon set as it seems rather well thought out. -This seems to also fall under the motif discussion and a valid question. 4.Another item to address with respect to the application itself are the fonts. This is a good chance to introduce non-Linux users to some of the great fonts that are out there. I think that Libre Office should use the Liberation Fonts for its default values. -This seems to also fall under the motif discussion and a valid question. 5.Laslty, I would like to address the user interface of Libre Office itself. The current version looks like a really bad imitation of Microsoft 2000. I would like to see a more document centric interface that takes advantage of today's widescreen monitors. By the way, bold, italic, and underline should be represented with a "B,I, and U" instead of an, "A, A, and A. Below is also a quick mock-up of Libre Office. -This is true. In fact, changing the UI is something I really want to participate in with this project. I know that 'radical changes' is never greeted well, but the UI really needs a radical change. With vertical real estate on the monitor becoming increasing more costly then horizontal real estate, we should attempt to create a new UI that improves on current systems like KOffice or Office 2010 and doesn't imitate them. -Daniel Merker From: Christoph Noack [christ...@dogmatux.com] Sent: Wednesday, February 23, 2011 11:30 AM To: design@libreoffice.org Subject: RE: [libreoffice-design] You've got hate-mail >[...] >Finally, many of the open questions can be resolved by talking about it. RE: [libreoffice-design] You've got hate-mail
Hi all, Sorry for surely breaking the thread with my mobile. So, yes, Sean is on this list and already contacted me via private mail and offered help. He said that he contributed artwork to several projects in the past. Concerning his open letter, it seems to me that he was not knowing about our efforts. For example, many of the issues he raised have been discussed here. Or, the fact that the UI is still the same doesn't take into account that also Project Renaissance (OOo) required a long time for preparation or infrastructure - but it would have been easy for us to make things worse in the short time available for the first release :-) Finally, many of the open questions can be resolved by talking about it. So I think we should think about the open letter like something the non-LibO community perceives when looking at us :-) Let's say hello to Sean and think how we can improve things together. Yesterday, I've sent him links to the kick-off and the open topics. Cheers, Christoph PS: Please, could someone forward this to the marketing list. Not that comfortable on the phone - just to avoid further rumours. Daniel Merker schrieb: >Hi, > >First off, I'm not defending what he is doing. Maybe some "surplus" counter with the amount of money we received after the capital stock? Thanks, Florian Hi Florian: Thanks for the blog! Exactly what was needed for LibreOffice to communicate to the outside world. Awesome article. I am sure this will be quickly picked up by many media outlets. The fact that the amount is/was reached at such a high pace is a great show of support from outside communities. The part in the blog that is most important now is for what the excess money will be used. You provided good information on this. Not only that, the articles provides just about any other question that people will have about the funds Really great. I now that I keep harping on this but ... banners for external websites, in different sizes would be appreciated too. They should be posted on our wiki pages and advertised as available on our website for visitor download. (I would think sizes that are compatible with left/right website blocks (columns) would be the ones that would be most sought after). I think using "Hate mail" is a little too strong. This would make it impossible for this individual to join our team(s) if he decided to join and to contribute or submit proposals. Let's just say that he had his reasons for posting and let's take the high road and offer him a place here where he could be part of the group rather than being on the outside. If any of you have some time to put together a banner for a flyer that we could use at the SCALE conference promoting the Document Freedom Day[1] and LibreOffice's support for it, we would be really appreciative. SCALE is happening this weekend. We would need it sometime by Wednesday night as Drew will have to print them up. An English banner would be what we are looking for. Even if this is not possible in such a short time frame, we could still use the banner and post if on our wiki resource pages for people to use at conferences, LUG, etc. The flyer will be printed on white stock paper in b/w. It will be based on the format of Challenge Flyer[2] that we have put together. Printed on half page and cut into two. Thanks for any consideration and help.
