this is suggestion more than a bug report. ubuntu has default cool on
screen indicators for volume control, display brightness ..ie. but there
is no Caps Lock on screen indicator by default. i am currently using
Lenovo ThinkPad X230 and unfortunately there is no led indicator light
on the keyboard for caps lock. could you please consider putting caps
lock on screen indicator by default to ubuntu? it would be cool if you
could. thanks.

[Bug 1662094] [NEW] [needs-packaging] mozjs38, Mozilla's SpiderMonkey JavaScript engine

2019-05-18 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

GNOME Shell and several GNOME apps are written in JavaScript and use
Mozilla's SpiderMonkey JavaScript engine via gjs.

GNOME 3.22 uses mozjs24. It looks like GNOME 3.24 will use mozjs38
(skipping mozjs31). Without this update, we can't update gnome-shell to
3.24.

This switch is important because the SpiderMonkey releases correspond
with Firefox releases which include security updates. The current
mozjs24 corresponds with 24.2 released December 2013. The current
Firefox ESR is 45.7 but the latest Spidermonkey release is 45.0.2 from
April 2016: https://developer.mozilla.org/en-
US/docs/Mozilla/Projects/SpiderMonkey/Releases/45

This will add a 3rd version of mozjs to Ubuntu 17.04 but the goal is to
drop mozjs24 in 17.10. The ancient original mozjs package in particular
is used by couchdb which has found it difficult to use more recent mozjs
versions.

[Bug 1829533] [NEW] Doubled desktop icons

2019-05-17 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

I customized my icons by changing the folder image. That worked fine in
Ubuntu 18.04.

When I upgraded to 19.04 my customized icons no longer showed the new
image, and to fix that I did... something. Install Nemo deskop, I
think, but I can't find a configuration or uninstall option for it.

Then the old icons with the customized images worked fine... but now the
folders have a doubles that are "dummies" (not working -- not customized
-- don't respond to being clicked).

In the Gnome Tweak Took Desktop icons is "off" but the toggle for
"Desktop Icons Switch" has an ! meaning can't be turned on or off.

I'm moderately techy in Windows, but still pretty stupid about Linux,
sorry. But I can probably run tests, find logs, paste commands into
Terminal Window or whatever.

THANKS!!!

[Bug 1828665] [NEW] [regression] Reboot after dpkg update set invalid Graphics resolutions (Dual Monitor) since ~7th/8th May

2019-05-12 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Now at Ubuntu 18.04.2 LTS, Gnome 3.28.2

Deduction. The user device settings menu for desktop control dual
monitors offer the correct modes available. The Bionic Beaver update
does something different.

Dual monitor configuration (Formerly Primary on Display Port 3840x2160
30Hz, Secondary on HDMI 3840x2160 30Hz on a three video output Intel
HD620) for Cancer Research using LibreOffice Calc across both.
Upgrades permitted manually rather than auto and usually done within a
day. Since five months both monitors were operating HDMI (Display port
not connected, not used) with Primary on HDMI2 and Secondary on HDMI1,
both at 3840x2160 30Hz. Neither monitor is capable of 60Hz at UHD which
is quite alright for office work. When installing such devices,
strictly only the 3840x2160 30Hz mode is available on the settings page.

After the most recent update (7/8th may), the primary screen was blank
on reboot (abnormal) and the secondary screen showed the extended
desktop without menus (as usual). Rebooting to see the primary was
unsuccessful and then the secondary monitor failed completely (confirmed
the next day as graphics card hardware, broken). Cold disconnect of the
secondary (awaiting repair), another boot brought up Primary display
only yet flickering occasionally.

Primary Display. Considering the possibility of error in the graphics
since the update - the Device settings (normal user page) revealed that
the update had changed the output to HDMI 4096 lines (which the PC
monitor can't do and the user can't select - outside specification). I
was in such a hurry to save it also from damage that I put back the
resolution to 3840x2160 30Hz immediately, without looking at which
frequency had been set with the 4096 value. Now on rebooting, the
display settings menu shows appropriately only 3840x2160 30 Hz as
choice. It seems the Bionic Beaver update needed something else and
set 4096 (which the user can't and notwithstanding the original user
configuration).

Secondary Display. I don't know what it set, but it blew the monitor
card. The linux sent either 3840 at 60 Hz or 4096 at any frequency
without negociation, without being able to respect the user settings.
It's also possible that it used a very low resolution for a few seconds
which the secondary monitor can't do either; it's (well, it was) a real
PC monitor with choices of DP or HDMI yet can jump into various modes
(such as 60/75Hz for gamers). After some Ubuntu upgrades in the past
(blank secondary screen), it was necessary to go back into the monitor
menu to switch off again the gamer mode.

Something similar happened in 2017 with Light Ubuntu Update. The
Secondary (very expensive) display making very alarming noises and
staying blank for half a day. Now it's truly broken (I know it's the
driver circuit and which parts). Waiting for repair or replacement, the
system is in use now with the same Primary PC monitor and a UHD
television as secondary to get by.

I worked 20 years on PC systems and monitors (for ship control) and
accept that in the past we nearly always used a simple basic portable
VGA monitor for system upgrades, then reconnected the user's gear later.
I think I'll only do (and postpone) Linux upgrades from now using a
spare single desktop monitor at 1920x1080. That was a very worrying
experience.

[Bug 1828649] [NEW] Wayland freeze

2019-05-12 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

When I switch to wayland the gnome desktop locks up before I see my desktop.
It doesn't lock up when I have my laptop closed and only one display connected.
When I connect up the second display, it locks up every time.
I tried deleting my monitors.xml file.. that doesn't make any difference.

I was able to get it to work by connecting one display via DisplayPort.
When I connect the second display, via active HDMI to DisplayPort on dock, it
doesn't work if I select Wayland. This wire configuration works fine with Xorg.

Additionally, when I lift my laptop screen, one of my monitors goes out
and re-enabling it causes another to go off. Linux kernel is not smart
enough to drive the 3 displays. I am able to drive two monitors and
have my laptop screen open in Windows just fine.

Of importance is that my DisplayPort to HDMI adaptor is ACTIVE. If I
was to use a PASSIVE adaptor, I cannot drive two external displays and
the laptop display.

With my laptop screen closed, I was able to drive both displays in
Wayland just fine in 18.10 so this is a regression. The GNU/Linux
kernel has always (as far as I know) been lacking in smarts to drive all
three displays.

This work system is has Intel 4000 Integrated video (Lenovo ThinkPad
laptop).

Main screen is 2560x1600 via DisplayPort to laptop.
Secondary screen is 1920x1200 via DisplayPort to laptop dock.

[Bug 1828606] [NEW] Ubuntu 18.04 "Files" app unable to show Samba/SMB shares where 'access based share enumeration = yes'

2019-05-10 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

>From Ubuntu 18.04's GUI, if I open the "Files" app and go to "Other
Locations", I see my samba/SMB server. If I double click it, it then
lists *some* of my shares. Specifically, it lists those where I didn't
use Samba's 'access based share enumeration = yes'[1] (which allows some
shares to be made completely invisible to some users). Note that Ubuntu
has *not* yet asked me to authenticate, so it makes sense that I
shouldn't yet be able to see shares I'm not entitled to.

The bug is: even after I authenticate (and let it remember my password),
then go back to Other Locations>MyServer, it *still* doesn't show the
other shares. In fact, I can't find *any* way to see the other shares.

Contrast this with macOS Finder. If I navigate to MyServer in the share
list, it doesn't show *any* shares until I authenticate, then it shows
*all* shares that the user has access to (and none of the shares the
user doesn't have access to).

Ubuntu could either:
 - adopt macOS Finder behaviour and get authentication first, or
 - update the share list after authentication is performed.

Its current behaviour makes some shares totally inaccessible (the crux
of the bug).

I doubt it matters, but my server is: FreeNAS 11.2-U4 (current newest)
using ZFS, running samba 4.9.6. Other users on the FreeNAS forum see
the same behaviour[2], so it's not particular to my setup.

[Bug 1828176] [NEW] Dock indicators do not work for snap apps

2019-05-08 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

I have installed a minimal version of Ubuntu 19.04 and later I installed
a few snap apps through the software center. Specifically, Caprine,
Slack, Skype.

Those apps load correctly, appear correctly on the dock at the bottom of
the screen, however the indicators that should show a running app are
absent for every such app.

Tapping a snap application icon on the dock sometimes brings it on the
foreground as expected (this happens with Slack), but other times (as
with Caprine and Skype) nothing happens.

Please note that tapping Activities (or hitting the Windows button)
shows all the respective application windows which means that this is
probably a snap & ubuntu dock only thing.

[Bug 1827738] [NEW] Wrong X Window Map State

2019-05-06 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Testet on Ubuntu 18.04.02 LTS

Use [xwininfo] and e.g. [emacs] or [terminal] to test for map state.

Call [xwininfo] and click on the open terminal window:

xwininfo: Window id: 0x2c04847 "tombert@bionic: ~"

  Absolute upper-left X: 741
  Absolute upper-left Y: 94
  Relative upper-left X: 10
  Relative upper-left Y: 38
  Width: 734
  Height: 458
  Depth: 32
  Visual: 0x2a0
  Visual Class: TrueColor
  Border width: 0
  Class: InputOutput
  Colormap: 0x2c5 (not installed)
  Bit Gravity State: NorthWestGravity
  Window Gravity State: NorthWestGravity
  Backing Store State: NotUseful
  Save Under State: no
  Map State: IsViewable
  Override Redirect State: no
  Corners: +741+94 -261+94 -261-808 +741-808
  -geometry 80x24+731+56

Now iconify the terminal and call: [xwininfo -id 0x2c04847]
The "Map State" is still "IsViewable" when it should be unmapped.

The reference I found:
"3.4.2.5 Iconify and Deiconify
A top-level window that is not Withdrawn will be in the Normal state if it is
mapped and in the Iconic state if it is unmapped. This will be true even if the
window has been reparented; the window manager will unmap the window as well as
its parent when switching to the Iconic state."

The big problem is that graphical applications cannot distinguish their current
state.
If this is not a bug, then please give advice in how to query the iconified
state.

Best Regards

[Bug 1827791] [NEW] Dell XPS 13 9380 - Screen and input freezes / hangs temporarily

2019-05-05 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Hello,

I have a new 2019 Dell XPS 13 (9380). I ordered the official Ubuntu
edition from Dell which came with 18.04. I then upgraded it to 18.10 for
a short while, before wiping it and installing 19.04 from a fresh ISO
download after that was released. This is the non-touch non-4K version
(13-inch 1080p). I have the i7 model with 16GB of RAM and an NVMe SSD
(so the performance should be pretty good).

Sometimes when typing in Gnome Terminal, the screen just freezes for
around 1 second. The cursor doesn't move, additional keypresses don't
appear, and any moving content doesn't update. After the freeze stops,
all the keypresses that occurred during the freeze do appear (they're
not lost). Immediately after the freeze, I don't see anything in dmesg
output that gives a clue. It almost feels how some old desktops did
around 10-15 years ago when everything would lock up while waiting for
slow HDD I/O, and then suddenly keypresses etc. would catch-up.

If there is something specific I should look for immediately after a
freeze in order to debug further, please let me know.

Note that this happens both on battery power but also when plugged into
the charger.

Someone else on AskUbuntu asked this question for the same model (9380),
which sounds very similar to what I'm seeing on mine (the freezing
part): https://askubuntu.com/questions/1133191/ubuntu-18-04-on-dell-
xps-9380-small-freezes-and-jumping-touchpad

Note that I filed
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/1827790 for what I
think is a separate issue related to screen flashing (as opposed to
freezing). The two events do not seem to happen at the same time which
is why I've filed them separately.
