did the sound system work, e.g. did you hear the login sound? Probably
there is a kind of sound played by AOL when you log in to their mail

I've tried logging into AOL email from the firefox browser in os x
and there is no sound played there.
When I was running the ubuntu live CD the sound and video in the
Nelson Mandela example folder was ok.

I would suggest trying the gutsy version of rhythmbox to see if it fixes

I have the same problem with evince-0.8-1.
After setting things up via the CUPS web frontend, evince recognizes
everything in the correct way and seems to work.
How is that done?

Closing
Answering to my question.
I've just updated the firmware of the drive to 1.73 from 1.71
Seems to of solved the problem.
The drive was SONY DVD RW AW-G170A

In g-s-m, in the processes tab, the memory column displays 0 bytes for almost
every process, which is wrong.
I think this is happening since the 2.19.2-0ubuntu1 release.

I've fixed the issue and submited a patch upstream. See bug #444564 in Gnome's
bugzilla.
The patch is also attached. You need to restart autogen of course.
