I had this problem with an NVIDIA GForce 6200, and when I removed
xserver-xgl I was not getting 3D effects. Then, I changed to this
setting in xorg.conf:
Option "Composite" "1"
and I was able to enable effects. So far so good!

You need to remove Nautilus from the session manager first. There are
two ways: the easy way is typing 'nautilus -q' into a terminal. The GUI
way is by going to System->Preferences->Sessions, switching over to the
Current Sessions tab, finding Nautilus and removing it from the session.
After this,
gnome-games already recommends python-gtkglext1 and python-opengl
It doesn't need those packages to run -- they just enhance the
functionality -- so it doesn't actually "depend" on them. This sounds

but does not allow Compiz to run. I'm using a ATI Radeon Mobility x700,

Running most up to date Hardy and can confirm the bug isn't fixed. I
have no ntfs partitions, just 1 root partition and 1 home partition. The
process that uses 50% cpu is nautilus, nothing else even comes close
including any gvfs processes.

The behaviour that I am seeing in Hardy is different from Feisty and
Gutsy and, IMHO, is not wanted behaviour. Reading my initial comment, I
can see that I was not 100% clear. Let me rephrase:
- let the username be "myusername"
- /home/myusername is an empty mountpoint
- when myusername logs in
I can reproduce, however I'm not sure what the desired output is. If I
had to say what I would desire, I'd say that the maximized window makes
no change to itself at all.
So rather than say they window is stretching, we should say that the
second bar's (top bar) allocated hover space (the 'gap' a
gnomevfs is still available, lot of applications use it and the issue is
not due to that. could you describe steps to trigger the bug?

I tried the above mentioned sentence:

Thanks you're right, I found that refresh button now.
In Clock 2.22.0, I cant select "Adjust Date & Time", nothing happens.
I can select "Preferences" though, when I click on the "Time Settings" button,
nothing happens.

This has been implicitly fixed, because the patch that caused the bug
has been dropped in favor of policy-kit support.
