and... if this helps, pressing the power key or the suspend/hibernate
key does nothing also. Works to turn on the computer. but thats it.

i ended up creating a shell script called gnome-session in my bin
folder that unmounts the folder first, then runs the real gnome-session.
So much for this working. I updated my laptop to Hardy and am seeing the
same problem. FF3, KDE 3.5.9, kwin.

This isn't really a workaround as you won't have any keyring functionality but
at least you can log in.
1) Enable login by disabling the gnome keyring PAM Module:
# cp

I had this problem too, I upgraded from 7.10 with alternate CD. The
gnome-terminal and fluxbox menu font both had the problem.
In my laptop, i fixed it as following:
1, cd /etc/fonts/conf.d
2, sudo rm 10-hinting-medium.conf
3, sudo ln -s ../conf.avail/10-hinting-full.conf
then restart
I found clicking on the escape key would make the window disapper, but I
surely wanted to disable it for sure. The gconf setting really helped me do
that.

the symlinks to be correct for upgrades from dapper, not from gutsy.
