RAM, with the only remedy being restarting nautilus. I have opened no

I see the same issue.
I used xwininfo and xev to capture the X events for the gnome-terminal
window when gnome-terminal is running and when it is not running.
You can see that the V keystroke event is not reaching gnome-terminal
when vmware player is running.

the fast user switch applet in the corner and the gnome-panel menu allow
to do those actions easily no need to add extra settings there, you can
open a bug on bugzilla.gnome.org requesting that if you want though but
ubuntu is not going to work on those changes
