After a crash I ran compiz in console. But as soon as I opened an
image in Gimp, it crashed.

I can confirm the same problem on my DELL Studio 1555 notebook, but
after installing the current mainline kernel (2.6.32-020632rc7-generic -
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeam/MainlineBuilds) all FN keys now are
working fine.
