I agree the empty cdrom icon is kind of useful, because you can
(usually) eject/open the drive tray/etc.. (that's actually missing in
karmic at the moment, but that's another issue :)

Then I restarted the system several times. I stopped nautilus with 'nautilus
-q' and then started nautilus again- several times.

Actually, there should be something to teach about both that and the alt +

@Marcus Carlson - I believe that resizing technique while helpful (what
I end up doing when having trouble myself) is specific to Compiz. I
guess those without good enough hardware would likely be running XFCE
instead of Gnome though.
@daniel - I agree, video tutorials could be helpful. Something
I unfortunately have no easy way to trigger the problem, however it
happens very frequently on my setup.

Scenario: Trying to delete a file from a non-home partition.
Error:
Cannot move file to trash, do you want to delete immediately?
[Cancel] [Skip] [Delete]
I've been trying to solve this for almost 2 hours.
I cannot find anything in the documentations about this.
I followed
This may be a complete coincidence, but while I was investigating this
problem, I discovered that my ntfs partition was hibernated. Dropped
into windows briefly and properly shut it down, and now my gnome-panel
is behaving itself.

Update: Creating a .Trash at the root of the partition in question and
changing it's permission to 777 with a sticky bit solved the problem.
Still i suggest Ubuntu should prompt the user for the root password and
solve this, specially as this also affects removable media.
