I'm now seeing this problem after having upgraded from 10.04 to 10.10.
Previously, gnome-screensaver worked normally. After the upgrade, the
screensaver will work correctly the first time or two after a reboot,
but, afterwards, instead of the chosen screensaver only a black screen

I remove telepathy-butterfly and keep only haze for msn, and now it works for
me. I can change the avatar and I don't have no more any problems connecting to
that account.

On 10.04 and 10.10 (32 64bit) Empathy 2.30.2 can't make a connection to msn
anymore (since today)
Connecting to msn with the same account, server and port with 'amsn' and
'pidgin', there is no problem.

same thing. The application closes itself almost as if the create
image button was linked to a close command. However, it does seem to be
working fine in 10.04 32 bit and 64
