I checked the print manager and the 4.7mb PDF document its printing is
showing as 4855k. So this seems to be working and not converting it to a
much larger document for printing.

the lpr command seems to work albeit slowly for a 4.7MB scanned document

Actually, I checked the rdepends on gnome-panel-bonobo, and gnome-panel
depends on it. I believe that the problem on my system must have been

I am reluctant to do that for three reasons: (1) I do not know what
else that would effect. I have been badly burned in the past using
repositories before they are released. (2) There is an error message:

this happens occassionally again - or still? - Anyway, I have not experienced
this issue for a long time in the meantime.

I have the same problem so I will confirm the bug.
As a workaround, I normally use emesene for my msn account as that is the one I
use the most, and I use empathy for facebook and google chat.
I like emesene because it's almost impossible to miss a message. The
icon flahes in the notification
