This has happened to me as well on a Dell Precision T3400 desktop with
Ubuntu 12.04 and GNOME 3.4.1 all 64 bits. I am using twinview with dual-
monitor setup and an Nvidia card and drivers.
The bug has the same behavior as described above.

edit file(s) with the external editor it constantly rewrites that/those
files. In my case the procedure is: open file with RAW editor
(rawtherapee), save JPG from there to filename_rw2_shotwell.jpg. At this
