Never mind, the bug is referenced in lubuntu-meta, I will try to get
some attention on it via forums, etc. This is pretty nasty for anyone
who wants to use GStreamer apps in Lubuntu.

This is still a problem in Lubuntu 16.04. gstreamer1.0-pulseaudio is
installed by default (presumably following Ubuntu), gstreamer1.0-alsa is
not.
'sudo apt install gstreamer1.0-alsa' fixes the problem. Gstreamer apps
such as banshee now output audio instead of silence.

No, that's *exactly* what I did. I upgraded from 231-1 to 231-4 and
rebooted and things broke. I did it three times just to be sure.

I just discovered that running "gksudo gnome-software" in terminal
starts the app normally. Don't know why this should be necessary but I
have changed the menu command accordingly as a workaround.

I finally was able to reproduce it. Turns out it happens only once after
system startup, if I log out of the session and log in again, the bug is
gone.
Steps to reproduce:
-Make sure no desktop file manager runs in the session (eg. remove it from the
session / xdg autostart locations)
