I found that in my situation it was the upgrade not working good with some
config settings in my ~/home. When I was beta testing, I don't think the
Ubuntu developers considered that many problems are associated with
upgrades. Once I did a clean install, this situation was gone.

OK, I looked at the file default.rule file.
And I found out that it belongs to the package tracker.
However, that package is in universe now.
I did not have it installed.
Anyway, after installing the package tracker, nautilus did start.
But the thumbnailer still did not work.

I went back to 16.04.5 LTS for one of the laptops (kernel 4.15). I was
surprised to get the same disappointing results as with 18.04.1 LTS.
Exactly the same scripts yield a satisfactory performance with an older
version of 16.04 LTS (kernel 4.4)!

At some point the UI keyboard switcher is not available, so I stuck with
locked screen. My input is switched from US to RU, so no way to pick the
right symbols.

are both working, so we will need some more info. Thumbnails are working
