Description:
When setting show-favorites to false by following command, log out/in or
reboot, show applications button does not bring up applications:
gsettings set org.gnome.shell.extensions.dash-to-dock show-favorites false

* Check the 'Extensions' app to ensure you don't have any extensions
other than the three Ubuntu extensions. Any others should be removed,
then log in again.
* Next time the problem happens, wait 10 seconds, reboot and then run:
journalctl -b-1 > prevboot.txt

If the mouse cursor still moves then Xorg is still working. This usually
means it's the gnome-shell process that has frozen or crashed, so please
follow these steps:
1. Look in /var/crash for crash files and if found run:
ubuntu-bug YOURFILE.crash
Then tell us the ID of the newly-created bug.
The stack trace is different but that's to be expected in cases like
this.
That upstream fix landed after version 40.0 so no it won't be included
in gnome-desktop3 version 40.0-1. And no release of Ubuntu has any
version newer than 3.38.5 yet.

This bug appears to be a deadlock of some kind. It most often happens
when I move the mouse (external USB mouse), but it has once happened
when I left the computer logged in but idle and has sometimes happened
in video conferences.
When the problem occur
Neither step 1 nor step 2 gave me anything unfortunately. I've
commented out the the problem types field, so perhaps I'll get more
useful data eventually. This is a rare occurrence.

else. This is VT2.
VT1 shows a login screen. I can get to console VTs as well and did so
