now the only strange thing seems to be that the volume control doesn't

this is annoying - the System - Administration - Services menu is
missing, and for example cups doesn't start automatically on the system,
how would I make it start automatically?
removing a feature, but not providing a replacement is not progress :(

an additional remark: poweroff doesn't work either. when the machine is
told to shut down, it ends up showing a 'Poweroff' text line on the
screen, then doesn't turn off...
