Just encountered this in Ubuntu 16.10. Painful bug.

Same problem here. This is absolutely fundamental to my day job, and is
something I took for granted.
As an aside, File Roller is great for detecting and opening all sorts of
files even if they don't have a logical (i.e. a known archive format)

I would like to add my support to this bug as an ongoing, persistient,
and irritating problem, which blocks my productivity in my day job.

I too can confirm that this issue is not fixed. Running fully up to date
system using nvidia legacy drivers, top and bottom bar which should be
black have images of the video controls (which are frozen at the time
the controls were supposed to dissappear).
This has been an issue for quite a while
