The problem was caused by a line
export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=".:$LD_LIBRARY_PATH"
in my ~/.profile file.
Oddly, when I then used ldd to compare the dynamic libraries used by
/usr/bin/evolution in the case where evolution works with the case where
evolution fails, they are exactly the same.
I did as you suggested, but this did not fix the problem.
However, then I tried renaming my "~/.profile" and "~/.bashrc" files and
this solved the problem. Should I be able to figure our which
environmental variable interfered with evolution, I'll report back.

Public bug reported:
Since an ubuntu software update two days ago (see below) evolution
(3.44.4-0ubuntu2) does not start anymore on Ubuntu 22.04.2 LTS.
Starting evolution in bash after a fresh reboot yields the error message
(evolution:6796): Gtk-WARNING **: 11:15:10.207: Getting screensaver
Just installed nautilus from bionic-propose, did a bit of testing
(including receipt from "Bug Description"), and no problems so far.

Public bug reported:
I'd expect CTRL-W to close the Rhythmbox window (just as clicking the
x-bottom) and CTRL-Q to make it stop and stop playing. With the current
protocol, CTRL-W does what I'd expect from CTRL-Q, and CTRL-Q has no
visible or audible effect.

DistroRelease:
I had problems with Japanese fonts under evince/okular until I installed
poppler-data (which was not an obvious fix). Shouldn't poppler-data be
installed automatically if I request Japanese language support at system
installation (as I did)?
