I disabled 'Same image in all monitors and clicked 'Detect Monitors.'
After detecting both monitors, the one connected to '1' on the cable
(green in the application) was shown on the right-hand side,

Having installed the ssh package, when I get the lockup behaviour noted
above, I can login, viar secure shell, to the machine.
Also noticed a bunch of these in /var/log/messages:
[drm] nouveau :03:00.0: PFIFO_DMA_PUSHER - Ch 2
[drm] nouveau :03:00.0: PFIFO_CACHE_ERROR - Ch
