I had this same issue and mine was also a keyring/security issue. In my case I had setup a PKI smart card to login to US DoD services from my home computer, but forgot to remove the card after a reboot, so gdm3 was trying to access the card. Once I removed the card and unplugged the card reader I was able to login, but not before I had used TTY and startx command to get to a desktop. So definitely check your credentials management or keyring for this issue.
