Here's a question for those that posted, what graphics card and graphics
driver do you have? Could these be related to the now unsupported ATI
9xxx series cards in fglrx, thus forcing us to use the default MESA
drivers?

I have similar issues with Samba shares and gvfs. I can use the Connect
to Server dialog just fine when connecting from a Hardy desktop to a
Hardy server using SSH, but it all falls flat when trying to connect
