Another data point: In Preferences - Mail Preferences - HTML Messages, checking the ''Never load images from the Internet options solves the problem for me. The Unknown background operation status notifications go away when I do this. This leads me to believe that the bug is related to

A fix for this problem is attached. Since the original calendar code is a spaghetti maze of magic numbers and manual inconsistent tweaks, this patch just changes the tweaks a little to achieve a larger font size. I've built packages for Natty and will try to create a PPA for it. ** Attachment
