I can confirm the same problem using Gnome 3.14.1; Nautilus doesn't
remember hidden files toggle, nor clicking the button in preferences
menu, nor the Ctrl+H; it works since session is open, but when closing
and reopen it the option is on again.

I tried this (using dconf-editor in Gnome 3.14.1):
Terminal → dconf-editor → org → gtk → settings → file chooser
The Show hidden option must be UNCHECKED and BE CONFIRMED at the bottom page
button - Set to default

I have a similar problem.
In recovery mode I manually reinstalled gnome-power-manager and
gnome-settings-daemon (based on advice found on Ubuntu support forums, I am a
newbie to Ubuntu). The message the configuration defaults for the GNOME Power
Manager have not been installed correctly.

The problem seems to be related to downgrading gdm to gdm-2.20.
Steps to reproduce:
1. downgrade to gdm-2.20 (e.g.: apt-get install gdm-2.20)
2. remove residual gdm's configuration files (e.g.: dpkg --purge gdm)
3. reinstall gdm-2.20 (e.g.: apt-get --reinstall install gdm-2.20)
