Closing this as Invalid - at least it seems to be by design: with GNOME,
gnome-shell is meant to listen and respond to the phase change (asking for
confirmation).
Without gnome-shell (or unity), you will be logged out if nothing intervenes.

suspends to disk after this and saves all the energy which Suspend To RAM would

I have still experienced this buggy using gnome-terminal and its menubar

I have fixed it now by installing any missing recommends, using sudo

Sorry, will close this again: the GUI is there after all, and it's just
that you have enable and then disable it to make it work.

There is a separate place to configure the sounds for the login manager
(gdm), and it is affected by a bug where you have to check and uncheck
the box once to make it stick.

Although I have selected Blank screen with When laptop lid is closed in the
On AC Power the screen does not get locked when closing the lid. The same

I have tried it with both /apps/gnome-power-manager/lock/blank_screen
and /apps/gnome-power-manager/lock/use_screensaver_settings enabled: the
screen appears to get locked only after the screensaver kicks in, not
when closing the lid.

From the extra message I do not think so, and it may be the reason why I
cannot change this whitelist or the changes to the Unity starter are not being
