Thanks Sebastien. That clarified the panorama. After the creation of the file (and a reboot) gnome-disks do see if there is a partition on any HD that has some resemblance to a veracrypt encryption and if the pass was saved under "seahorse" it opens it up automatically. Manually I get the same

Public bug reported: Using mount from nautilus (open with) or right from Gnome Disk, the file in question is "mounted" as a loop device. Therefore, no opening of that container nor questions about how to open the file. This is Ubuntu 18.10 from 18.04. Already tried 18.10 on a VM (Live session)
