I sorted out the problem...
just needed to change to a new theme, and restart... no errors then...
think it was because I was under --failsafe

I am running Ubuntu 6.10- the Edgy Eft
I changed my theme, and then the desktop crashed.
tried to get into the desktop, but did not work.
rebooted, and linux went into the terminal (not desktop)
I re-installed Gnome-session, reboote
