Yes I tried to find this bug before i reported it. I've tried to find it
since - and still cannot. Maybe I forgot to type in some kind of magic
incantation. Maybe I'm stupid.

I think this is probably a little different (as the behaviour changed on
upgrade) - but I found the incantation in the linked bug (as posted by
you!) to switch back.
Reposted here in case anybody else is looking for it.
sudo -u gdm dbus-launch gconftool --set
