Did an early upgrade of Ubuntu GNOME to Vivid and this happened.

Appears to still be a problem in 14.04, further, after rebooting or
killing those processes and starting over, while the account shows up it
just asks for your password over and over.

Nope, it seems to have resolved itself for me. Others seem to have
reported similar issues, though.
