Wow. The poppler pdf output seems to be... less than optimal. Running pdfimages on a 3-page pdf that came from the evince Print preview functionality gave me 10 000 ppm images. Poppler seems to embed bitmaps into the pdf, one for each character of text. No wonder the file is huge. Possibly
