I'm on a Windows machine, but I can report the PDFs render well in
Sumatra but they don't in Evince. I've read that Sumatra uses MuPDF
instead of Poppler so it may be the latter's fault.

I solved the issue by uninstalling some *-gdm-packages. Try installing
mythbuntu-gdm-theme, for example, it'll break GDM appearance.
