Andrew, the gdm is the component which shows the login screen and the
user theme doesn't affect the gdm component.
Could you please provide a screenshot and attach it to this bug if I
have misinterpreted your description.

To me it sounds like you're seeing the default gdm login screen, but to
be sure please make a screenshot.
