Binary package hint: nautilus
This is what I did:
1. inserted USB drive, which mounted automatically
2. copied a document of the drive in Nautilus
3. tried to safely remove drive
4. it would not unmount (in use by Nautilus, but no windows open) so unplugged
the drive

nautilus uses too much memory after removing USB drive
The problem seems to have been caused by a 6MB image, presumably with
rendering a thumbnail. The RAM usage began to increase immediately when
opening the drive in Nautilus. After deleting the image, the problem
did not recur.
