It seems that they fixed the bug. I just moved 450 images from one
folder to another and it was really fast. Also would like to know what
was causing this issue.

This problem still exists in 12.04.4. I have added a screenshot. When
this happens I am unable to close evolution and I have to use evolution
--force-shutdown from the command line to close evolution! It would
have been better if evolution would time out images it cannot load.

and you won't see the number of files counts next to the folder. If you
do this locally you will see the number of files next to the folder.

I cannot connect properly anymore with my IMAP server. When I get
evolution to work it just says Pinging IMAP server and I see that its
trying to connect to the server. I have removed the imap folder from
.evolution/mail and even removed all the password settings in seahorse.

I had the same problem after I upgraded to Jaunty. Today I moved the
.evolution/mail/imap folder and let evolution recreate this folder and
the problem was solved.
