I also experience this issue (Ubuntu 10.10, up to date, amd64) when
opening a directory containing a svg file embedding many big jpeg
pictures. (no tiff at all)
Actually, it occurs with 2 similar svg files. The 1st one does embed all
jpeg files and the preview doesn't even have the time to be
FYI, after double checking, the very same issue also occurs under Ubuntu
Natty (today's daily) and under the latest Gnome 3 preview liveCD (based
on OpenSUSE).

It may be a factor, but as I said earlier (what, you didn't reread the
355 comments ? ;-) I managed to reproduce the issue (especially in the
bottom panel, next to the show desktop applet) from a clean user
profile, with the default set of applets.
What was particularly striking was the fact that
Omer Akram : sadly, the upstream report didn't yield any result as the
(gnome) triager didn't manage to reproduce the issue, which is a real
one, as I can reproduce it easily personally, and I know at least one
other person who encounters it once in a while

Actually, you have to switch to TTY0 :
- type ctrl + left-alt + F1
- log in as the user who logged in under X
- ps aux | grep nautilus then kill -9 [nautilus process]
It works from a default Ubuntu installation unless you disabled the TTY
text consoles.
Lonnie : this is definitely not the case. Many of us experienced it on
fresh installs, and I even reproduced it yesterday from a Live CD.

Ah, I figured out the issue didn't occur after removing the
~/.config/Empathy/geometry.ini file.
Apparently, to trigger it, you need to reduce the vertical size of the
chat window (once) and then try to reproduce the steps above.
I'm sorry, I should have tested this before.

See below a screenshot of what occurs when compiz is enabled in Maverick
beta : the eog window is oversized, thus one cannot see the bottom of
the picture nor its status bar. It happens with all pictures that do not
fit the screen and have to be resized by eog.

Hello Pedro. Here's the backtrace you asked for. Are you using an AMD64
or 32 bits distro ? Did you enable the aforementioned plugin ? Here, it
occurs everytime, even from the CD (AMD64).

Ok then : it also occurs when booting from the 32 bits 10.04 CD.
The steps are :
- boot from the CD (64 or 32 bits)
- open the device where the .PNG file attached above is stored
- open it
- preferences - plugins - tick date in statusbar
- close it
- reopen the png
then, with the very same
Interestingly, if I launch in parallel a very CPU heavy task (i.e. VLC
with HD DVB-T channels), the rates above differ significantly. It almost
works properly 9 times out of 10...
So, depending on the machine, tasks, and so on, one may not be able to
reproduce it...
