I can confirm that the recently released evince 2.28.1-0ubuntu1.2 fixes
my printing bug (bug 479897). This was without installing the cairo
package mentioned above.

What I forgot to mention in the original post: The printer is on a
network, attached on a remote cups server. So I believe the kernel has
nothing to do with this.

after upgrading from jaunty to karmic, evince stopped printing PDFs.
Printing still works fine from other apps (firefox, gtklp).
When printing from evince, I get a page:
ERROR: undefined (COMMAND TYPE: nametype)
OFFENDING COMMAND: 0a "0a"
OPERAN
