To get this fixed in Karmic, I need a reproducable test case. Could one

No, it's not the obvious choice as Thunderbird and other xulrunner based
apps use the same file format. I would think that most people that
install Firefox extensions do it from within Firefox. In that case,
they never even see the .xpi file. I would suggest you make a proposal
on http://brainst
Thank you for reporting this to Ubuntu. While .xpi files are used in Firefox,
there are also used in other applications based on xulrunner such as
Thunderbird or Songbird. It is not clear from the extension which application
should be opened. Therefore, I am marking this as won't fix.
