To fix this problem I did 2 things:

1. asoundconf set-pulseaudio
2. aptitude install libasound2-plugins

The first creates a .asoundrc.asoundconf in your home directory that
tells ALSA to use Pulse Audio.  The second step may only be necessary
for people on 64-bit systems.  I am not sure.  I had to do it to get rid
of the "Cannot open shared library /usr/lib/alsa-
lib/libasound_module_pcm_pulse.so" error.

Now everything is peachy.  Hallelujah!  Praise be to the Spaghetti
monster.
