It appears this is an old bug:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/diodon/+bug/1391330
And it was fixed. The problem is, Ubuntu repo has old version.

Same here. Been banging my head for months and couldn't find the reason
or fix. Reinstalled everything from scratch and still the same. The last
strings in log files were:
Syslog (repeated at least 10 times):
g_object_unref: assertion 'G_IS_OBJECT (object)' failed
Oct 27 09:52:39 Asgard
I removed proposed and got back to stable. Evince is working properly
again.
Those packages were reverted:
bsdutils grep im-config initscripts ipmitool klibc-utils libappstream-glib8
libblkid1 libfdisk1 libglib2.0-0 libglib2.0-bin libglib2.0-data
libimobiledevice6 libklibc
I guess this one is duplicate. And I do have proposed enabled.

In Gnome Classic mode using Ubuntu 12.04 64 bit, top and bottom panels

visual corruption affecting several panel applets
I use 3 machines. One with ATI graphics, one with nVidia and a laptop
with Intel. It happens on all systems and I *never* preserve home

watching double BT icons,
Oh, forgot to mention. It also happens on i386 and amd64 Ubuntu. So it's not
graphic driver, it's not architecture but must be something with gnome-panel.
Can desktop-effects interfere with panel?
The first time I've noticed this was on Karmic since November I think.

I've always liked linux mechanisms for dealing with multiple windows.
This is not the case anymore since apps are constantly stealing focus.
