If there are any Karmic users still subscribed to this bug, I could use
some company over at

It looks like there might be a solution for this problem over at
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/udev/+bug/581925 . For those
of who are less technically proficient, could someone please provide a
cookbook to applying this patch to Ubuntu 9.10 (amd64)?

Kernel does not recognize
No sounds in Karmic. Same as #37 and #44, I installed freedesktop and
activated Default preference.
Re: #43. Karmic was my first (and last) Ubuntu install. Since mid-2009, a
pattern has emerged:
a) Release software filled with regressive bugs.
b) Trivialize complaints.
c) Mark bugs as too old
@Robbie, @Andy,
Why are we now Declined for Karmic? Why are do you conclude that any issues
remaining are hardware specific rather than confirmed CD drivers are hardware
specific?

Thank you, Robbie. That is informative. Please do not abandon those of
us using Karmic who have been seeking resolution of this problem for a
year. I thought that regression testing between Jaunty and Karmic might
be just as likely to reveal the source as would a fresh look at
Maverick. (For

that my root file system is set up with dm-crypt, lvm2,
2nd-hand info is that it also was NOT a problem in Jaunty. It was
attributed to a regression in 2.6.31.

This bug has been around for over a year, and for those of us who suffer
with it, it is a very big deal! Can someone please escalate the
response so that we can get a backport for Ubuntu 9.10?

That does sound like progress. Just a heads up, though Locke99_GS
tried it with 2.6.33 about a week ago and failed. See

done till the solution is stable.

Unable to burn CD or DVD with 2.6.31 kernel
Troy,
According to
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/405544/+editstatus
, the Canonical Kernel Team got it on 12-01-2009. (I am not sure that
the posting went up on the same day, though.)

I was recently told that burning data to DVD-R under 9.10 does not work
because of a regression in the 2.6.31 kernel.

I agree that fixing this bug should be of high importance, since it is
currently impossibly to burn backup DVDs. See a parallel thread here:
