try the following command:
sudo lsof | grep /usb/
This should give you some pointers to processes using files in e.g.

The calculator incorrectly performs exponentiation if the base is
complex and the exponent is a positive integer. Under these conditions
the calculator exponentiates the real part of the base and leaves its
imaginary part intact, that does not agree with the complex numbers
This bug is still present in 10.04 LTS. Since it's LTS, it seems the fix
released should be backported to Lucid, or am I wrong?

I can reproduce this on Ubuntu Lucid. But this was not the case on 8.10
or 9.04 on my machine. My machine is EEE PC 901.
