I can't just go and flip over those icon names because the package also
ships fallback icons for hicolor icon theme which are not symbolic.
Those fallback icons have to be changed too. And this patch is so deeply
upstream that I'm afraid we'll end up patching it in elementary OS only,

years already... The problem is not in encoding, it's keyboard layout
(language?) switch that is not shown by the indicator.
My test case: 2 input languages, English and Russian, indicator (not

Totem thinks DVDs are interlaced and applies deinterlacing filters, but the
fact is they are not interlaced and deinterlacing filters poorly affect image
quality.
Tested on PAL DVD with and without libdvdcss and on NTSC DVD with libdvdcss in
GNOME becomes less and less customizable over time, and still becomes more and
more popular, because it never hit the line after which a missing feature
renders the desktop unusable.
I think this bug should be re-targeted to Light themes now.

No, it's not a dublicate of bug #388904. The tabs don't show the drive
label at all. I've made another screenshot, it's more clear this time.
The bug still exist in Karmic bulid 20090825.

I've finally found the root of the trobles. This was caused by some
files with unknown symbols it their names (invalid encoding, actually;
two of these files were generated for gnome menu by installation of a
Windows game via Wine). The files and their trash info are attached to
this comment.

When i try to hide an item with unknown characters in its name the menu
applications menu becomes empty. I got such item in the menu by
installing a Windows game via Wine. Its file from
.local/share/applications attached.
