I can confirm this is still an issue in Lucid. I'm not able to test in
Maveric yet. Disabling and re-enabling the plugin worked for me.

I just spent an hour creating a playlist on my iPod only to find out
later that the playlist could not be saved, so I lost an hour's work.
This is unacceptable, Rhythmbox should not allow you to create a
playlist on the iPod if it cannot be saved, or should at least warn you
that you will lose it
