Confirmed. Here it was gs that hogged the cpu core, and my file grew to 1.8 MB
containing only bitmaps.

I have almost this same problem on Karmic.
I use Kubuntu 9.10, and upon inserting a mixed mode CD, the KDE
automounter offers me to play it as an audio CD or copy the CD with K3B.
Neither of it will work, and I also cannot access the data part of the
CD.
Even worse, I cannot rip the CD with

I have this issue with Karmic on an Asus laptop which has the i830
graphics chip. Unfortunately, Robert's suggestion (#60) didn't work for
me.
So I have the flickering, and my screen is moved to the right.

I was now successful by adding the nomodeset option to my kernel options
in menu.lst. Everything is back in order with this option.
