More info -- under both accounts in the in-place upgrade to Edgy, VLC
and kino both display correct color. Only the default player, Totem,
does not.

I did an in-place upgrade to Edgy and the problem remained. Must be one
of the config files.

Now I've created another account in Edgy. When I log into that one, I
get supersaturated color as described previously in this thread.

Okay, I have the symptom. I installed Gutsy and updated it completely
as of 4-26-08. Then I tweaked my system for video editing with kino
(this involved altering the repositories list). Once it was working I
backed up the partition, then the next time I booted I stupidly accepted
39 updates.
Oops, scratch that, it's Intel G33 video.
