Same problem for me, gnome-display-settings only works if the X server
is restarted after plugging in the external monitor. Worked correctly on
9.04.

This problem does not occur with beagle-search and seems to be frontend
specific. However something similar occurs in deskbar-applet:
accentuated matches appear but result in a crash of the beagle plugin
when selected (see bug #37153in deskbar-applet:
the bug seems to have vanished here to. I don't know how but cd playback
works fine again.
