I used ibus-setup:
- checked Use system keyboard layout in Advanced tab
- removed English in Input method tab
It works.

Here is a variant which touch more profoundly the layout algorithm. It
will add in the minor direction (rows for horizontal task list, columns
for vertical one) when too constrained.

I'm affected to (new laptop with wide screen and I cry for vertical
space). The main reason I'm adding a comment is to mention that the
Window Selector (switch between open windows using a menu) panel
applet isn't affect (it's probably obvious for some, but perhaps not
for all people affected).
I've got the same problem : When I click on Import, an empty progress
bar appears and nothing more. The console shows :
(gthumb:30860): Gtk-CRITICAL **: gtk_progress_set_percentage: assertion
`percentage = 0 percentage = 1.0' failed
My system is a fully updated 9.10
