Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-settings-daemon

I use the KDE desktop, albeit with some gnome applications.

After the upgrade to 9.04, the gnome applications started to make sounds
on button press events (for example). I removed .gnome, .gnome2, .gconf
and the problem persisted.

Using gnome-sound-settings, I turned off the sounds for events, but for
the setting to be enforceable, gnome-settings-daemon must be running.
Running the daemon decreased the desktop performance of the KDE desktop
(X loads up to 30% when idle and lag moving windows) and clashed with
some of the KDE settings I configured, namely "Desktop Effects" and
"Screen size and rotation".

The final solution was to remove ubuntu-sounds. Ideally, gnome-settings-
daemon should have a mechanism of selecting which settings it should
manage. I was only interested in setting the sound properties, so I
wished for all other settings should be left undetermined.
