I dont know which package to choose but I confirm this bug.
I have to add this line (e.g.) to /etc/rc.local when I want to save brightness

apt-get remove --purge gnome-applets gnome-applets-data and install this again,
or
then remove files in /tmp like: all files with the word gconf and
orbit-yourusername
