I tried
sudo aptitude install gnome-settings-daemon
and it worked for me.
It uninstalled gnome-compiz and when I executed the same command a second time
everything worked.
Now apt-get upgrade is working again.

Another issue that is probably in correlation with this:
When I close the lid on my laptop while it is plugged in, the screen stays
active instead of turning off the screen and the keyboard backlight.
